Self-serve analytics

Self-serve analytics is the idea that people across a company can answer their own data questions without filing a ticket with the data team. It has been a goal for years, and it has mostly fallen short.

Dashboards were the first try. They work for known metrics and break down on the long tail of one-off questions, so people end up back in the data team’s queue. Agentic analytics is the next attempt, and it handles the long tail because the agent builds a query for whatever gets asked.

What makes it work this time

Self-serve only works if the answers are right. An agent that guesses just moves the bottleneck to people double-checking it. The reliability comes from context engineering, which is the part earlier self-serve tools never had.
