The Model Context Protocol is an open standard developed by Anthropic that lets Claude connect to external tools and data sources through a standardized server interface. For analytics use cases, teams can write MCP servers that expose SQL execution, warehouse metadata, or semantic layer APIs, and Claude can then call those tools to answer questions. MCP itself is open source, but Claude is a closed, usage-priced model. This approach gives engineering teams a flexible building block, but the data context layer, governance, and evaluation framework still need to be built from scratch.
